Research In Motion Ltd. on Monday showed off a new version of one of its high-end BlackBerrys, updating the Bold with a touch screen and fresh software.

T-Mobile USA said it will carry the BlackBerry Bold 9900 later this year.

Research in Motion is under pressure to update its high-end phones as it's losing out to iPhones and phones running Google Inc.'s Android software. Last week, the company cut its earnings and sales forecasts for the current quarter, saying it's selling fewer and cheaper phones than expected. Its stock plummeted. The fall continued Monday, with the shares losing 55 cents, or 1.1 percent, to $48.10.

Like the original Bold, launched in 2008, the 9900 has a keyboard under a 2.8-inch-screen in landscape orientation. It's thinner than before, at just 10.5 millimeters, making it the thinnest BlackBerry yet.

The new phone will come in two versions: one for the type of network used by T-Mobile USA and AT&T, and the other for the type used by Sprint Nextel Corp. and Verizon Wireless. T-Mobile USA is the only carrier to announce that it will carry the phone, so far.

RIM demonstrated the phone on the first day of its BlackBerry World conference in Orlando, Fla.

Motorola Droid X (Verizon Wireless) Review

The Droid X is the latest member to join Verizon's army, and just like the original Droid before it, it's a beast, but in a good way. The smartphone rocks a brilliant 4.3-inch touch screen and offers some great multimedia features, including an 8-megapixel camera with HD video capture, HDMI output, and DLNA support. However, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention that it does lack some features that the similar-looking HTC Evo 4G has, such as a front-facing camera and, of course, 4G support.

 

Motorola and Verizon aren't afraid to go after the competition, whether it be blatantly calling out a certain phone in TV ads or introducing a pretty killer device right before the launch of another. 

 

The good: The Motorola Droid X boasts a gorgeous 4.3-inch touch screen and great multimedia features like an 8-megapixel camera with HD video capture, HDMI output, and DLNA support. The smartphone can also be used as a mobile hot spot.

The bad: Camera is a bit sluggish. Motoblur software is a lot better but still not quite as refined as HTC Sense. Lacks a front-facing camera.

The bottom line: The Motorola Droid X makes another fine addition to Verizon's Android family, bringing with it a rich multimedia experience and more connectivity features.

Sony Ericsson W890i Review

Bigger is really better with the Sony Ericsson W890i. Its got a pumped-up camera 3.2MP and is also 7 grams heavier and slightly wider about 2.5mm but disappears when you slip into your pocket.

The Good: Gorgeous brushed silver finish fit for a Terminator. Smooth and improved keypad. 2GB stick included. 3G. Decent sound recorder. Decent earbuds. Solid battery life. MusicDJ app lets you compose original ringtones on-the-go. A paused track holds its place, even after phone shuts down.

The Bad: Phone can’t take calls and won’t display caller ID during mass storage transfer or while connected via USB. The result: beaucoup missed calls! Camera needs a flash (yesterday!). Memory slot can’t be accessed without removing battery cover. No 3.5 mm jack. No wi-fi. Despite a near-perfect keypad, the tiny menu buttons can feel a little cramped. Radio only plays with headphones (i.e., no boombox’d NPR).

The Bottomline: The best improvement to the W890i is that it can swallow a 4GB stick, delivering twice the tuneage of the W880i.

Nokia E66 Slider Review

Nokia E66 - the latest email-optimized device from the Nokia Eseries product range. Slide-to-open Nokia E66 easily mobilize a broad range of personal or professional messaging needs, including Microsoft Exchange, the world's most widely adopted corporate email solution. 

The Nokia E66 is a slim but luxurious GSM slider smartphone running Symbian S60, with Wi-Fi, GPS, 3G and a 3.2MP camera, to name a few of its many features.

The Good: Calls on the phone are loud and clear both directions. Thin form factor and grippy textured back make it enjoyable to hold. Got a decent flash camera that takes sharp pictures and video.Wi-Fi and 3G load fast in the browser.

The Bad: Symbian doesn’t feel very fast. Apps and options are buried deep in menus. Displaysn non-optimized pages in actual size so it’s hard to navigate the screen

The Bottomline: It’s good, but it’s not $500 good, especially without a qwerty.
